Future-Proofing Finance: Bybit Panel Explores Bitcoin ETFs
Jan 16, 2024

The successful launch of the first Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) was a truly historic moment in markets, marking the first integration between crypto and traditional finances. While detractors gnashed their teeth, BTC products saw inflows many multiples the volume of other ETFs. But what does it all mean? Bybit’s internal experts sat down for a panel discussion to explore the path forward, and here are the highlights.

Bitcoin is Here to Stay

Bitcoin (BTC) ETFs represent a watershed moment for investors. The simplicity and ease of access these investment vehicles provide are poised to transform institutional participation in the crypto market. The interest in BTC is high due to its outperformance vs other assets, its differing correlation values, and ongoing interest as a new store of value.

“The approval of the BTC spot ETFs represents a quite significant milestone in retail investment,” said Bryan Aaron, head of brand knowledge at Bybit. “It allows retail investors to gain real exposure to BTC without the complexity or direct cryptocurrency ownership... making accessibility pretty simple, and it really lowers the barriers for the retail investor to enter into the cryptocurrency space.”

Better Regulation is a Win-Win

Regulatory oversight and streamlined tax reporting mechanisms associated with BTC ETFs are expected to enhance the appeal of these vehicles. These factors not only bolster BTC’s attractiveness to institutional investors but also provide them with a sense of security and familiarity as they begin to move into the crypto financial system. Indeed, the increased oversight will be a crucial factor for traditional funds looking to allocate to crypto.

“One of the key implications of regulatory oversight means it's essentially a regulated financial product,” said Eugene Cheung, head of Bybit Institutional. “Bitcoin spot ETF offers an extra layer of security and brings legitimacy. For retail investors, they feel a lot more comfortable and more confident in investing in these kinds of financial products overseen by financial authorities.”

Furthermore, BTC ETFs represent not only an opportunity but also a brand new means to diversify portfolios. Bitcoin's historical performance and its low correlation with traditional assets make it an attractive addition and the ETFs have now made it very easy for investors to get exposure in a regulated manner. Indeed, the ETF structure is expected to positively impact Bitcoin's volatility and liquidity, stabilizing its price over the long term.

A New Financial System

Crypto markets are already a parallel financial layer with significant efficiency improvements. In contrast to traditional markets, crypto trading operates 24/7 and offers instant settlement, eliminating the need for prolonged waiting periods for trade clearance. Furthermore, the inefficiencies of traditional systems, exemplified by the sluggish SWIFT system, contrast sharply with the speed and seamlessness of crypto rails. By creating a gateway between the old and new worlds, the BTC ETFs can be seen as a means of onboarding more people and more funds to take advantage of the speed and efficiency of the new system.

“I think crypto is actually building a parallel financial layer compared to what the traditional market does,” said Hao Yang, head of derivatives at Bybit. “We're building a more open, more transparent, and more fair marketplace. If done properly and done right, a lot of people, the whole world, will be highly benefited by the innovations we're trying to achieve within the crypto ecosystem.”

A New Way

The approval of Bitcoin spot ETFs heralds a significant development in the financial industry, bridging the gap between the traditional financial system and the crypto world. This milestone marks the beginning of a more integrated financial landscape, bringing much needed innovation to an aging and unjust financial system.

Asset management firms, hedge funds, and family offices are now able to offer these investment options to their clients using Bybit Institutional. Retail investors can explore the new world of crypto using Bybit Web3.
